Three papers presented at UMAP 2026
Three full papers co-authored by Christine Bauer were presented and published at the at the 34th ACM International Conference on User Modeling, Adaptation and Personalization (UMAP 2026) in Gothenburg, Sweden.
The publications reflect collaborations with Utrecht University and DPG Media across different aspects of personalized and context-aware systems:
• Modelling preference heterogeneity for context-aware decision support during public transport disruptions (presented by Anouk van Kasteren) investigates how situational factors influence individual preferences during public transport disruptions and proposes models for context-aware decision support.
DOI: 10.1145/3774935.3806191
• Does tone matter? Exploring context-aware explanations in route recommendations (led by Marloes Vredenborg and presented by Judith Masthoff) examines how situational context—particularly urgency—affects users’ preferences for explanation tone and introduces a methodology for designing context-aware recommendation explanations.
DOI: 10.1145/3774935.3806780
• Enhancing diversity in news recommendations increases click-through rates: Insights from an online experiment and user study (presented by Robin Verachtert) reports results from a large-scale deployment on NU.nl (a Dutch online newspaper). This industry collaboration demonstrates that diversity-aware recommendation methods can simultaneously improve topic diversity, click-through rates, and perceived relevance.

Congratulations to all co-authors and presenters.
